The next challenge

If you’ve made it this far into my website, you hopefully know by now that I’ve recently started the next challenge; freelance marketing.
Having been in employment from the age of 13 (I was so desperate for independence even then and an excellent pot washer I might add), the idea of not being accountable to a ‘boss’ is completely alien to me.
They say, to find a job you enjoy and can progress in, you shouldn’t look for a job, instead look for a boss. Well, to date I’ve been remarkably fortunate in that department. One of my very first bosses (selling bacon sandwiches on a train station platform after school) once told me I’d be Prime Minister one day, whilst that was probably a bit of a stretch and definitely not a career prospect I’d relish, it was the kind of confidence building that I’ve been fortunate to enjoy in all of my positions since.
Find yourself a boss who will not only identify your strengths, but support and nourish them and you’ll go further than you ever dreamed.
Moving on from my first marketing role, where I had found a work family, was one of the hardest decisions I ever had to make. Without making those kinds of tough choices I certainly wouldn’t be writing as a self-employed woman; I’ve learnt you must jump to reap the rewards.
The constant throughout my career has been working for management that not only saw the value in marketing but were truly supportive of the individuals involved. The confidence and trust that my bosses have had in me was a remarkable compliment and probably the reason I felt I was good enough to go it alone.
Having the confidence in my own ability to go freelance was the turning point; the thought of doing ‘my own thing’ and having the flexibility of clients, audiences and marketing mix – ultimately allowing for endless creativity, proved too tempting.
It’s been an exciting start to 2020. Leaving the world of 9-5 (although realistically far longer hours) behind me, with an unknown path ahead is equally daunting and thrilling.
Whilst I love a challenge (see ‘about me’ for more info on that!), I am extremely mindful of risk, so wanted to ensure a couple of contracts under my belt before the start date. To achieve that, I’ve been counter intuitive, not marketing myself but instead relying on recommendations and existing contacts. I’ve been extremely fortunate in that (fingers crossed) that goal has been achieved. My personal advice would be if you’re thinking of going solo, have that same back-up – it’s a daunting enough prospect as it is…
In my first 4 days freelance, I’ve identified that working from home is not for me. Unsurprising really considering I’ve had a lifetime of “going to work”, so have stumbled across a great initiative in Bordon, Hampshire, where they offer collaborative work-spaces. It’s certainly taken the edge off and provides both networking and company during lunch breaks.
It’s going to be an interesting year, I’ll keep you updated on my journey along with tips and tricks I learn along the way…probably with some marketing advice thrown in for good measure too.
